Whitney Elizabeth Houston (August 9, 1963 – February 11, 2012) was an American recording artist, actress, producer, and model. Houston was also one of the world's best-selling music artists. Her albums sold over 170 million albums, singles and videos worldwide. Whitney Houston was born in Newark, New Jersey. She was the third and youngest child of Army serviceman and entertainment executive John Russell Houston, Jr. and gospel singer Cissy Houston. She was mainly of African American descent. After the 1967 Newark rebellion, her family moved to East Orange. It was a middle class area in New Jersey. Whitney Houston and her family started to live there.

At the age of 11, Houston began to follow in her mother's footsteps and started performing as a soloist in the junior gospel choir at the New Hope Baptist Church in Newark. She also learned to play the piano there. Her first solo performance in the church was "Guide Me, O Thou Great Jehovah". It was a great success for her at that time. When Houston was a teenager, she attended Mount Saint Dominic Academy. It was a Catholic girls high school in Caldwell, New Jersey. She met her best friend Robyn Crawford there. While Houston was still in school, her mother continued to teach her how to sing. Houston was also exposed to the music of Chaka Khan, Gladys Knight, and Roberta Flack. They were the best singers and performers of their time and they had an impact on her as a singer and performer.

Houston's first album Whitney Houston was released in February 1985. The album was an impressive, musically conservative showcase for an exceptional vocal talent. With many expectations Houston's second album, Whitney, was released in June 1987. The album was a production of Masser, Kashif and Walden.In 2009, the Guinness World Records cited her as the most-awarded female performer of all time. Her awards include two Emmy Awards, six Grammy Awards, 30 Billboard Music Awards, and 22 American Music Awards. These are the most important awards for a singer. They are among a total of 415 career awards in her lifetime. On February 11, 2012, Houston was found dead at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, in Beverly Hills, California.
